Being Patient will speak with Dr. E. Wesley Ely, author of Every Deep-Drawn Breath: A Critical Care Doctor on Healing, Recovery, and Transforming Medicine in the ICU (Sept. 2021), about how he realized that medical practices at the intensive care unit (ICU) could end up harming patients, leaving them with physical, mental and cognitive decline. Ely, professor of medicine and critical care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will discuss his research into the brain changes that can occur in ICU survivors and his mission to help prevent long-lasting harm in patients with critical illness.
